This has been a transformational year for your City Club. By far, the most visible transformation has been the construction of our new home at Playhouse Square. If you’ve read the coverage or seen a forum online or on WVIZ, you start to get a sense of it, and if you’ve had a chance to enjoy a forum in the new space, you have felt the magnitude of the change. It’s all because of you—whether you’re a member, donor, partner, sponsor, stakeholder, volunteer, speaker, or audience member—you are a Guardian of Free Speech.
When we launched our fundraising campaign, we chose the name “Guardians of Free Speech” because the City Club has long been known as a Citadel of Free Speech, but an institution is only strong because of the people who make it so—the Guardians. And as Guardians of this sacred and patriotic work of honoring freedom of thought and expression, look at what we’ve accomplished together:
So, as you explore this annual report, I hope you see yourself as part of this story. Your participation—sitting in the audience, listening online, posing a question—you are protecting, practicing, and celebrating freedom of speech. You’re a Guardian of Free Speech.
We look forward to welcoming you to the City Club’s new home throughout the year ahead.

At the City Club, we believe in the power of conversation to bridge divides and foster understanding. Our forums connect individuals, viewpoints, and actions to strengthen our community. Speakers from around the community, the nation, and the world come to the City Club to share their expertise and engage with City Club members and friends in civil, civic dialogue.
“As we represent the US and the Rust Belt, we know that we have really impressive ideas here. This is the 4th pavilion in a row for the Architecture Biennale that is coming from an organization in the Midwest.”
– Tizziana Baldenebro, Executive Director SPACES

“I don’t always want to talk about being gay. I don’t want that to be the thing people associate me with. I’m a teacher. I’m a dad. I have other goals and dreams and wants. I don’t want you to just think about me as a gay person. I just want to be Chasten.”
– Chasten Buttigieg, Teacher & Author

“Cleveland’s economic story exemplifies a basic truth: government, industry, and labor, working together in partnership, can unlock extraordinary economic potential.”
– Brian Deese, Director, White House National Economic Council

“If there’s not a teacher at the table, that is problematic. You cannot form policies without the experience of classroom instructors.”
– Kurt Russell, National Teacher of the Year

“I love when people work together on things, when systems work for folks, when wastewater treatment plants work, and bureaucracies are doing the best that they can do to work for people.”
– Kyle Dreyfuss-Wells, CEO, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District

“By focusing on the root cause of these disparities that play out in different ways across our communities, we can start to get to the conditions that are actually creating these negative experiences for some people.”
– Marcus Walton, President & CEO, Grantmakers for Effective Organizations

“I do think it’s incumbent upon the generations above [teenagers today], to do their part to create hope. By helping solve and address some of the deeper challenges that young people see around them.”
– Dr. Vivek Murthy, US Surgeon General
“Part of my draw to Birthing Beautiful Communities was the fact that I could be part of building a village for women that needed it.”
– Jazmin Long, President & CEO, Birthing Beautiful Communities
“We changed the name ultimately because we believed it was the right thing to do, and we actually think it was the smart thing to do.”
– Paul Dolan, Owner, Cleveland Guardians
“Trump will not deliver Trump policies. He will deliver chaos. And if anything lead to a backlash that will set his policies much further back than they otherwise would be.”
– Bill Barr, Author & Former United States Attorney General
“It’s empowering to see Native women stepping forward again and being supported to reassert that authority and power, and become leaders again in our communities – and one of the ways we’re doing that is through STEM.”
– Sarah EchoHawk, CEO, American Indian Science & Engineering Society
“Treat kids like kids, especially in the school system where we make them go, and we tell them they have to be there. That should not be this huge gateway into the justice system like it is.”
– Brooke Burns, Managing Counsel, Youth Defense Department, Office of the Ohio Public Defender
“In this war, there is only one aggressor and that is Vladimir Putin. There’s only one victim and that is Ukraine.”
– Wendy Sherman, Deputy Secretary of State
Thanks to these individuals who decided to become champions of free speech and join the City Club as members this past year.
Philanthropy Circle Members give at least $1,000 annually through their membership.
For more than three decades, these individuals have served as the foundation of the City Club. Some have even been members for more than 50 years.
The City Club was founded in 1912 when 78 individuals bought shares for $10 and became our first members. This past year, 877 people renewed and joined the City Club as members. Whether they are here in Cleveland or across the globe, we grateful to all our members who support our mission by asking questions of our speakers, serving on programming committees, inviting friends to forums, and giving generously to keep us strong.

CMSD CEO Eric Gordon presented his final State of the Schools as he prepared to retire after 11 years at the helm of our community’s largest school district.
This year Mayor Justin Bibb presented his second annual State of the City address at East Tech High School where hundreds of Clevelanders gathered.
This past summer newly elected Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Roynane presented his first State of the County from the bank of the Cuyahoga River.
Throughout the year, audiences joined us for a hot dog, a beer (or root beer), and informal community forums at Happy Dog in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood.
Every summer we present a free series of forums at Public Square designed to bring the community together to discuss issues in neighborhoods throughout our city.
In partnership with Saint Luke’s Foundation, we returned to Morning Star Baptist Church to hear hip hop legend Talib Kweli discuss how music can be activated to promote healing and community strength.
A special City Club forum hosted at Cleveland State University featured Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney in conversation with Judy Woodruff, Anchor at PBS NewsHour, to offer her thoughts on the state of the nation and the future of the republic.
Through the Guardians of Free Speech Campaign we are building a new home for civic dialogue at Playhouse Square and a $10 million endowment to sustain your City Club and protect freedom of speech for generations to come. We hope you’ll join a growing community of supporters are helping us bring civic dialogue to more people, lift new voices, amplify necessary conversations, protect free speech, inspire bold thinking, and build a strong foundation for City Club’s future.
Student attendance at the City Club helps cultivate civic engagement and participation is absolutely free. When students come with their teachers to a forum, they have the opportunity to see civic dialogue in action and to use their voice to ask questions of our speakers. Not to mention, they get a great meal and often get to meet the speakers after the forum.
When students join the Youth Forum Council, they find a special opportunity to work with engaged students from across the region to collaboratively plan and execute forums from start to finish, centered on issues most important to them and their peers. Through working directly with production professionals, they strengthen team planning, production, marketing, event management, scripting, public speaking, and other critical skills.
We are honored to host the annual high school debate championship at the City Club and to have served as a home for student debate for decades. This past year Jeremy Battle from University School and Ella Jewell from Kenston High School faced off in a Lincoln-Douglas style debate on the following topic: In a democracy, a free press ought to prioritize objectivity over advocacy.
Since 2013, The Hope and Stanley Adelstein Free Speech Essay Contest challenges high school students to examine the role of free speech in the 21st century. The top three winners of each age group receive scholarship prize money. This year’s essays about critical race theory were judged by 25 community volunteers who helped pick our winners.
High school engagement at City Club forums is rebounding with attendance increasing 150% over last year. This year, 1,337 students from 32 Greater Cleveland schools attended forums, including MC2STEM High School whose students attended more than 30 forums, making them our most active school partners. In addition to growing our current student programs, our new Educational Engagement Manager is creating a holistic approach to student engagement, collaborating with educators to integrate City Club resources into school curriculum, and building a new college-focused engagement program.
